ABOUT THIS PLAY

“How We Got On might be my favorite production from all my years watching Available Light.”

– Richard Sanford, Columbus Underground
“A fizzy multicultural slice of teen life… endearing and entertaining… a sweet and soulful coming-of-age fable.”

– Michael Grossberg, Columbus Dispatch
“A hot show… fresh and poignant… cinematic.”

– Lisa Much, Columbus Underground

This sweet and fresh coming of age story is a portrait of three artists as Midwestern MCs, pursuing their dreams despite all obstacles in the Golden Age of Hip-Hop.

Deep in the suburbs of 1988, Hank studies hip-hop as much as his father wants him to study algebra, memorizing his favorite lines, and longing to create music of his own. Soon he meets Julian, the only other kid in the neighborhood who’s into rap music. Inspired and inspiring, Idris Goodwin’s How We Got On is an authentic, midwestern hip-hop fable.
